December 15, 2008 - “Two” Much Talent in BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series

MABRAcrossLooking at the final standings of the 2008 BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, one might thing that the MABRA organizers had offered a two-for-one coupon.  Nearly every champion doubled-up in some fashion, proving that the BikeReg.com MABRAcross has “two” much talent. MORE

November 20, 2008 - Whitmore’s Offers Worlds Largest Women’s Purse -- Again

Stories of an economic meltdown dominate the daily news and world politics.  But cyclocross, at least in America, seems unfazed.  Record entries are commonplace and increased purses are the norm.  Nowhere is that trend more apparent than this weekend’s Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup on New York’s Long Island. November 19, 2008 - MAC CYCLOCROSS HAS WORLDWIDE PRESTIGE

No sport in America is growing faster than the bicycle racing sport of cyclocross.  On Sunday, December 7, the MAC Powered by SRAM Cyclocross Series, one of the richest and most internationally influential cyclocross series in America, returns to Lake Fairfax Park in Reston Virginia for the Capital Cross Classic presented by The Bike Lane. November 18, 2008 - TROPHY DASH ON LONG ISLAND

With only the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup remaining, the battles for the inaugural North American Cyclocross Trophies, and the money that goes with them, are pitched.  With two races in the Hamptons this weekend, we look at the favorites to take the titles in the most geographically extensive cyclocross series in the world (covering an area more than twice as wide as the World Cup). November 17, 2008 - MAC Powered by SRAM ENTERS “BONUS ROUNDS”

MAClogoWith a points championship based on the seven best finishes, and with seven races already in the books, the 2008 MAC Powered by SRAM Cyclocross Series prepares to enter its “second season” in The Hamptons on November 22-23.  For many racers, especially the “bounty hunters” chasing championship points, the final three MAC races on opposite ends of the region (the two Whitmore’s Landscaping races on Long Island and the Capital Cross Classic in Virginia) can be considered “bonus rounds” that could almost be said to be doubly important to the bounty hunters gunning for points in MAC’s 16 season points divisions. November 15, 2008 - REVISED SCHEDULE FOR WHITMORE’S and "RU-MORE CONTROL"

Promoters of the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup have pointed out that their race-day schedule will deviate from the normal MAC Powered by SRAM program on November 22-23.  “We’ve taken pains to show people that it’s not the end of the world to get here,” said Myles Romanow, “but at the same time, we recognize that it is at least a little further for most competitors and we have to show some respect to the racers from DC and the rest of the southern end of MAC for whom it actually is a long trip.” MORE

November 10, 2008 - ENTIRE ATMOSPHERE UP FOR GRABS AT WHITMORE’S

November 5, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA:  Myles Romanow is giving the atmosphere to a lucky cyclocross racer.  The promoter of the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup in The Hamptons has announced that he will be giving away the atmosphere as part of the event’s “Ready, Set, Race” raffle.  Romanow had previously announced that one of the raffle prizes will be a complete, custom-built Richard Sachs Team Cyclocross bike, complete with wheels, SRAM components, shoes and helmet.

Now, Romanow has teamed up with Richard Sachs again to give away the “ATMO-sphere”, a baseball personally autographed by Sachs himself.  “It’s a really lame prize ATMO,” said Sachs airily, “not nearly as good as all the other s**t Myles is giving away.”  (“ATMO”, short for “according to my opinion”, is Sachs’ signature catchphrase.)  The raffle will also award a set of Dura Ace 7850 SL scandium tubeless clincher wheels and a complete SRAM Rival group set as prizes.  Non-UCI competitors at the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup will automatically receive one free raffle ticket for every race they enter.  Raffle Tickets can also be purchased through the event’s registration page on BikeReg.com. “People always knew I had balls,” said Romanow, “now I’m giving one of them away.”

November 4, 2008 - TIGHT POINTS BATTLES IN MAC POWERED BY SRAM

MACsmall

Halfway through its ten-race season, the MAC Powered by SRAM point chases are wide open affairs.  Heading into this weekend’s doubleheader in New Jersey, no fewer than 76 Elite men are mathematically in contention for the points lead.  Consistency has paid off for the top three men in a season where there have been no repeat winners.  Andy Wulfkuhle (273 points), Greg Wittwer (270 points) and Wes Schempf (254 points) top the table despite not having won a race.  Jamey Driscoll has only missed two races and is the top-ranked race winner with 250 points. November 4, 2008 - BikeReg.com MABRAcross Goes Urban

November 3, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA:  This Sunday, November 9, the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series goes downtown for some industrial strength cyclocross in Charlottesville Virginia.  Unlike many cyclocross races that are held in remote areas or on the outskirts of town, the third annual “Urban Cross at IX” will be held in the middle of Charlottesville, just three blocks from the city’s pedestrian mall and business district, and directly across the street from the event’s primary sponsor, Blue Wheel Bikes.  The venue for the race in Charlottesville is actually a former industrial complex that once housed the Frank IX and Sons silk factory.  Cyclocross legend Jonny “El Gato” Sundt has designed the course to take advantage of the property’s unique character.  The course he has laid out is almost completely visible to spectators coming from the pedestrian mall as it circles the remains of the factory and winds through a sand pit and, weather permitting, mud bogs.

Now in its third year, this will be the first year that Urban Cross at IX has been part of the popular BikeReg.com MABRAcross series.  So far this year, every race in the series has had a record turn-out; and sold-out classes have become a regular occurrence.  Because of its position on the calendar, the Urban Cross at IX will carry added importance for riders who are trying to improve their position in the BikeReg.com MABRAcross standings.   Since the series drops each rider’s lowest score, some racers could increase their season points total by as much as 25% with a good result in Virginia.  For some racers, their results at Urban Cross at IX will be doubly important as the race is also part of the Virginia Cyclocross Series.

For more information on the Urban Cross at IX, see BikeReg.com

November 4, 2008 - GARDEN STATE MAC

November 3, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA:  The MAC Powered by SRAM Cyclocross Series makes its annual swing through the state of New Jersey this weekend, November 8 and 9.  The two races will encompass two distinct areas of “the Garden State”.  The weekend starts with one of the iconic course features of American cyclocross racing -- the “Amphitheater of Pain” at the Beacon Cyclocross in the South Jersey town of Bridgeton.  Then the series moves north along New Jersey’s famed turnpike to Jamesburg for the 10th annual HPCX.

The course for Saturday’s Beacon Cyclocross is unique and is a personal favorite of many racers.  The fast, hard, sand-packed roads though the forest are very different from the typical east-coast grass.  But even though the course is considered one of the fastest cyclocross courses in the country, it also boasts two of the biggest and slowest obstacles.  The beach run, which would be the biggest obstacle at almost any cyclocross race, is 79 meters long and has two right-angle corners.  But at the Beacon Cyclocross, it is overshadowed (literally) by the “Amphitheater of Pain”, a three-story outdoor theater.  It would be a formidable obstacle even if the racers used the access stairs, but the organizers instead route the course through the terraced seating area where each step is at least two feet high.  Compounding the difficulty is that the finish is a mere 45 seconds from the top of the amphitheater, making it important tactically was well as physically.

On Sunday, the MAC Powered by SRAM racers will be back on their familiar east-coast grass for the HPCX, an event co-promoted by the Highland Park Hermes and the Rutgers University Cycling Team.  Originally intended as a temporary location during municipal construction at the race’s original venue, Jamesburg’s Thompson Park proved so popular with the racers that it has become the event’s permanent home.  The park’s amenities include convenient parking and heated restrooms.  But the park also has a lot of terrain changes that the organizers use to craft an interesting course.  Fittingly, as the Rutgers University Cycling Team co-promotes the event, the race is also part of the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference’s cyclocross series and the New Jersey Cup.

More information and pre-registration for both races is available on BikeReg.com

October 13, 2008 - BELGIAN EMBASSY SPONSORS U.S. KID’S CROSS - BikeReg.com MABRAcross’ “City Bikes DCCX”

Conshohocken, PA, USA:  The organizers of the October 26 City Bikes DCCX, the only cyclocross race held within the city limits of the U.S. Capital, have announced that their “Lil’ Belgians” Free Kids Race will actually be sponsored by the Belgian Embassy.   “Lil’ Belgians” racing, a traditional part of every BikeReg.com MABRAcross event, is a free fun-race for young children that occurs just prior to the Elite races, and it’s not unusual to see Elite and Amateur racers “assisting” their training-wheel -equipped youngsters by pushing them around their own special course.

Until now, the Lil’ Belgians moniker had been just a cute tribute to the homeland of cyclocross.  But at the City Bikes DCCX, Belgium will be involved in an official capacity as the Belgian Embassy will be offering all participating kids a special (and tasty) prize.  The kids won’t be the only ones getting a tasty Belgian prize, however, because the City Bikes DCCX organizers will keep the Belgian ambience rolling by serving free Frites to riders and spectators alike.  Press Contact Information:  BikeReg.com MABRAcross - SpectaSport LLC; KenG@SpectaSport.com - Ken Getchell, Account Manager, 610-397-1950

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

July 15, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA:  American Cyclocross just got bigger and richer, and America will never be the same.  So say the promoters of eight of the biggest and well-known international cyclocross races on the American calendar, who have dropped a bombshell by forming an eight-race, coast-to-coast series with $7,000 in year-end cash bonuses.  The North American Cyclocross Trophy Points Championship is scheduled to begin this fall and includes such notable races as FSA Star Crossed, Rad Racing GP Presented by Kona and FSA, Gran Prix of Gloucester, Boulder Cup, and the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup.   All eight races are UCI sanctioned and already appear on the 2008-2009 UCI calendar.

Promoters of the series stress that this is a concrete, guaranteed-to-happen series.  According to RAD Racing GP’s Jim Brown, “The series is made up of races with a proven track record.  They are the classic cyclocross races in North America.   The races are already on the UCI calendar, the financial backing for the series is already in place and the advertising has already been negotiated.” Brook Watts of Boulder Cup puts it a little more colorfully, “This isn’t one of those outrageous pie-in-the-sky plans that gets announced at InterBike and never materializes.  I don’t think anybody’s ever put together a National Series (in America) made up completely of successful already-existing races.  The plans for the North American Cyclocross Trophy aren’t contingent on anything.  It’s ready to go right now.  The series begins at the FSA Star Crossed on September 20, and it will have more prize money and more UCI points than any cyclocross series in North America.”

Money and international prestige are the foundation of the NACX Trophy, which was conceived from the start as a professional series.  “Top racers are interested in two things, money and points; and we’ve got more of both of them than anybody else in North America,” said Myles Romanow, long time promoter of cyclocross in the upscale Hamptons.  “It’s only July, and right now the series is already committed to race prizes in excess of $40,000 cash – plus appearance fees and an additional $7,000 in year-end cash bonuses for the top three season finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions.  That’s all cash, not merchandise.  And we also offer more UCI points than any other series in America.  The Trophy offers more UCI points than any series in the world outside of Europe.”

Cyclocross in America has experienced extraordinary growth in the past decade.  Nobody has had such long-standing and close-up perspective of that growth as Paul Boudreau, promoter of the Gran Prix of Gloucester in Massachusetts.  Affectionately nicknamed the “New England Worlds”, Gloucester has become one of those venues, like Wimbledon or Augusta, which defines its sport.  When asked how he expects the NACX Trophy Series to benefit his race and the sport in general, Boudreau just shrugged and replied in typically minimalist New England fashion, “The classic races.  The trophy.  The prize worth winning.  How could it not be great?”

For more information on the North American Cyclocross Trophy, contact Series Spokesman Terry Buchanan at 425-503-2333 or Media Coordinator Ken Getchell of SpectaSport LLC at KenG@SpectaSport.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

July 11, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA:  The BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series has announced its upcoming seven-race program.  In a break with east-coast tradition, the 2008 BikeReg.com MABRAcross will utilize NASCAR-style scheduling with only one race each weekend.  According to MABRA Cyclocross Director Chip Sovek, “Occasional multi-race weekends are great, but if you do it too often you run the risk of diluting the anticipation for the series.  Most of our racers are amateurs and age-groupers with families and responsibilities outside of racing.  Instead of burning them out or making them pick and choose which weekends they can travel, we wanted to give them the opportunity to compete in every race of one of the country’s premier ‘cross series, and still have time to fix the house, do homework or have a recovery day.  Our goal is that more racers will sign on to race every race in the series.”

The BikeReg.com MABRAcross season kicks off with two of its signature events, the Ed Sander Memorial on September 28 and the Breast Cancer Awareness Cyclocross on October 4.  The heart of the season sees three races that have been very successful in their own right joining the BikeReg series, DCCX, Rockburn Cross and Virginia’s Urban Cross.  Rounding out the season will be two staples of the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series on either side of the Thanksgiving Holiday: the appropriately named Tacchino Cicliocross (“tacchino” is Italian for “turkey”) and the MABRA Championships promoted by the family of U.S. Olympic Cycling Team member Bobby Lea.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

July 7, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA:  While much of the cycling world’s attention is on the Tour de France, many U.S. racers are already looking forward to what, for many, has become the focal point of the racing year; cyclocross season.  In recent years the MAC Series has established itself as one of the most prominent cyclocross organizations in North America.  The series continues to grow with several new events joining MAC’s core group of legacy races this year, led by the event that caused one of the biggest buzzes of last year’s racing season: the two-day, double UCI C1 Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup in “the Hamptons”.  Promoter Myles Romanow’s race featured World Champion Erwin Vervecken and the world’s largest purse for a woman’s cyclocross race last year. And, though he has not yet made any statements concerning his plans for this year’s race weekend, Romanow was seen talking to many top-tier racers at January’s World Championships in Treviso, Italy.

The new-look MAC schedule starts with an entirely new opening weekend in September.  Baltimore’s early-season Charm City Cyclocross, which traditionally boasts one of the largest entries in the Mid-Atlantic region, switches series to join MAC this year as part of an opening weekend pairing with a new UCI race, the Nittany Lion Cyclocross, in the bike racing Mecca of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

2008 also sees the return of MAC cyclocross racing to Maryland’s legendary Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area near Newark Delaware.  One of the east’s finest Mountain Bike Riding facilities, Fair Hill was also a staple on the MAC calendar during the series’ formative years.  After a successful test event last year, MAC Cyclocross will make its long-awaited return to Fair Hill’s well-appointed Equestrian Center on the first of November.
