FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

November 27, 2007; Conshohocken, PA, USA: Some of the fastest bike racers in America are coming to Fairfax Lake Park in Reston Virginia on Sunday for the internationally-ranked Capital Cross Classic presented by the Bike Lane. The race is the final stop for the 2007 Verge MAC Cyclocross Series and the last opportunity to score international points that determine the starting positions at the U.S. National Championships in two weeks.

Cyclocross racing takes place on what could best be described as an obstacle course akin to steeplechase horse racing. But this year, the riders may be getting more obstacles than they bargained for. “I’m thinking of changing the race’s name to the Capital Cross Construction Classic,” joked race promoter Chip Sovek recently. “Construction of new facilities at the park has completely closed off what used to be the heart of the course. But one of the great things about cyclocross is that it’s so flexible. There’s plenty of room in the park to have a great course, we’ll just have to walk a little bit further from the parking lot to see it this year.”

“Walking a little bit further” won’t cause any issues for the event’s newest sponsor, outdoor gear retailer REI, which joins The Bike Lane bicycle shop in sponsoring the event. REI is sponsoring the professional women’s race at this year’s event, one of two internationally-ranked races on the day’s schedule. The highlight of the day’s racing is expected to be the international men’s race, which was one last year by Michael Muller of Switzerland.

The Capital Cross Classic is not all about professionals, however. Kids are a real focus of the program with a FREE kid’s race, on their own specially constructed mini-cyclocross course, at 1:00. The kid’s race will be open to any child with their own bike and helmet. Training wheels, tricycles and parental assistance are more than welcome because the focus is on the fun that a bicycle can bring. That focus also carries over to the event’s beneficiary, “Trips for Kids of Metro Washington DC ( http://www.tfkmetrodc.org/). Trips for Kids of Metro DC helps disadvantaged youth in the Metropolitan DC area learn important life lessons through fun and educational mountain bike excursions into Virginia, Maryland and DC parks and nature areas.
