FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
November 23, 2007; Conshohocken, PA, USA: Howard County Maryland has been recognized by Sports Illustrated and the National Recreation and Parks Association as “Sportstown Maryland” and also received recognition from those organizations in 2005 as the best in the Mid-Atlantic Region for Community Sports. Now, Howard County’s Parks and Recreation department is taking a leading role in “ America’s fastest-growing participant sport” by promoting the first-annual Rockburn Cross on December 9. While other municipalities allow (or sometimes even encourage) their cyclocross races, it is believed that this is the first time an American government has actually taken the financial initiative to create its own cyclocross race. Howard County Parks and Recreation will be undertaking the promotion of the race in conjunction with Lateral Stress Velo, Inc., which also promotes the hugely successful “BikeJam” in Baltimore that is part of USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar.
Howard County, Maryland is the home to approximately a quarter-million residents and has recently been ranked by the U.S. Census Bureau as the third wealthiest county in the country based on median household income. The race will take place at the Howard County park system’s Rockburn Branch Park, which is in close proximity to I-95 and MD 100 and directly adjacent to Patapsco State Park. The features an extensive sports complex, with mountain bike trails, disc golf course, playground, and broad natural spaces that are the perfect canvass to create a great cyclocross circuit.
