October 26, 2007; Conshohocken, PA, USA: The first weekend in November will play a pivotal role for those racers chasing division championships in the 2007 BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series. An extremely rare double-header weekend will see rounds 4 and 5 of the seven race series. Saturday, November 3, will see the return of cyclocross racing to Maryland’s Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area just across the Delaware-Maryland Border from Newark Delaware. The “Wayne Scott Memorial” honors the former promoter of the Fair Hill Cyclocross races who was forced by job requirements to relocate to South Carolina several years ago. Still very much alive, he is nonetheless missed by the informal band of brothers and sisters known as the Delaware Cross Coalition of Delaware who are organizing the race.
The following day, November 4, the traveling circus travels several hours south to the magnificent Ida Lee Park, in Leesburg Virginia for Squadra Coppi’s annual “Tacchino Cicliocross”. The Ida Lee Park is easily the most majestic venue on the BikeReg.com MABRAcross circuit. The race, which had previously been held much further south, was relocated to Leesburg last year and received resounding reviews. The hilly terrain and scenic views of the Catoctin Mountain range created a crowd-pleasing course for both riders and spectators that will be duplicated, with minor changes, for this year.
The promoters of the Leesburg race are club members of Squadra Coppi, a club named in the honor of Italian cycling legend Fausto Coppi. The well-respected organization is a modern racing club in every respect, but has the charming tradition of naming all of their promotions in Italian, in keeping with Coppi theme. “Tacchino Cicliocross” translates to “Turkey Cyclocross” and was so named because of its origins as a race held near the American holiday feast known as Thanksgiving that traditionally features a roast turkey. Now held sooner in the year to accommodate the schedule requirements of Ida Lee Park and other promoters, the race still retains its unique moniker.
These races will also see the introduction of the revised MABRAcross race-day schedule. Because of the huge growth being experienced by the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, the Category 3 & 4 Women will now have their own separate race starting at 9:00 am.
